Volunteer Spotlight –
Darlene Fischer

Tell us about yourself! (Where you live, hobbies, background)

I live in Ofallon, Mo and have lived in St. Charles County for most of my life. I love horseback riding, all dogs especially German Shepherds, bowling, reading, and writing. I also love helping other people because it makes me happy to see them smile.

Tell us about your family! (spouse, children, grandchildren, pets)

I have 3 grown children and 1 granddaughter. I have been happily married to my husband Jason for 14 years, and together we have 2 beautiful German Shepherds named Samson & Lilah.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself!

I think I can be really funny,  but my family says I can only make myself laugh.

Who is your biggest role model?

I don’t really have any one role model. I admire any one who strives to make the world better in their own special way no matter how large or small their sphere of influence.

What is your favorite book/ movie/ TV show?

My favorite book is definitely the Bible. It is full of drama, love, mystery, psychology, comedy, history, it’s all in there. As far as movies, I like most blockbusters, but one movie that really warms my heart is “Heart and Souls” with Robert Downey Jr.  My go to TV shows would be either “King and Queens” or “The incredible Dr. Pol.”

If you could have one superpower what would you want it to be?

The ability to fly. It would be a lot safer and save SO much time!

Do you live by any piece of advice or life motto?

Always leave the grass greener everywhere you go, no matter who you meet or what you do.

What is something you own that you cannot live without?

My toothbrush and my IPad.

Do you have a favorite type of exercise?

I love powering walking with my two fur babies.

How do you deal with work stress?

I go out with friends to laugh and talk about it until I feel better. This always works!

If you could encourage someone else to volunteer with Community Strong, what would you say?

It’s a great place to be a part of something bigger, make new alliances and also friendships. Singularly we can all make a difference, but together we are stronger and more powerful! It’s like the saying goes, “it takes a village!” This is one of the greatest villages I have ever had the privilege of being a part of.

What is your go-to healthy habit?

Fruit and vegetable smoothies.

How do you volunteer with Community Strong?

I try to help connect the community with various resources that are available for their family members, their employees, or their congregations. I do this through quarterly publications in “FocusOn St. Charles County” magazine, and by personally visiting various leaders and clergy introducing them to local websites and handouts for their members. I also work with “Addiction is Real” to help educate the community on how to recognize signs of addiction and what to do if you suspect signs of substance usage.

What have you learned about yourself through volunteering with Community Strong?

That I love being part a team where everyone joins together and works towards the same goal.
